Inventing New Typology
ARC1041 | Building Science 1 | Infographics, Drawing, & Modeling
In this project, we proposed a new typology based on the future scenario of colony on mars. They comprise a self-sufficient, infinitely expandable/flexible base for manufacturing and living.
The lifecycle of our proposal follows the sequence of Martian colonization. First, robots will be sent from earth to improve environment and produce basic components (e.g. module frame) Then, people and props will arrive to finish production, and conduct research. The majority of material used will be extracted from Mars since it has rich deposit of metals and non-metals (silicon). Once part of module reaches end of life, it can be torn down and materials made it can come back to life cycle of new parts.
As mentioned, Mars is rich with some metals and non-metals that could assist achieving a cradle-to-cradle lifecycle. Besides, its air contains 98% of CO2, which can be used in the process of producing carbohydrates by an artificial 'photosynthesis.' Mars has a relatively proper weather condition compare to Venus, which is also close to the Earth. There're storms happening on Mars that drives micro dust particles which could be detrimental to components, human respiratory system, and effectivity of solar panels on gaining energy.
In our proposal, we assume human can entirely control and apply fusion reactor for nuclear energy using Helium-3, which is now common on the Moon. Comparing to fission reaction which uses radioactive isotopes with long half life, fusion is 100% clean and doesn't pose harm on the environment.
For culture, we aim to promote the durability and affordability of our proposal. This is done by using equilateral triangular modules that eventually form a hexagonal pattern. Customization is possible from wall to roof according to the program one wish to build.
For technology, some of them include 3d printing, CO2 to Carbohydrate, fusion reactor are mentioned. Besides, CO to protein through biological enzyme is also important for produce food for both human and future cattle(feed). This will complete the micro cycle between human, animal, and plants.
